The verdict is in on the chicest (and most practical) manicure of the season, so let’s hear it for short nails! If you are a salon regular, chances are you probably tend to keep your nails longer, but it might be the perfect time to give short nails a try – and we have season 5 of Emily in Paris to thank for it.
Super short nails have always had their dedicated fans – myself included – but for some, a perfect manicure involves nails that are long and painstakingly shaped. Just a few weeks ago, I was in Bangkok getting a manicure, and my technician seemed shocked when I asked her to ditch the extensions and keep my nails super short instead. But there are many benefits: if you type a lot, they’ll certainly make your life easier.
In addition to the shape and length, there’s a specific colour gaining traction right now, too. Inspired by none other than Lily Collins’s Emily Cooper in Emily in Paris, super short brown nails are here to stay for winter.

Earlier this week, nail artist Imarni took to Instagram to share a close-up of the “super chic short squared chocolate nails” she created on Collins for the upcoming fifth season of the hit Netflix show, and we have a winner in our hands – quite literally.
Imarni shared that she created Collins’s short brown nails using The GelBottle Inc, and after some sleuthing British Vogue can reveal that the shade used was Mocha.
If you want to hop on the short nails trend, brown seems like a seasonal favourite, but if dark brown feels a bit daunting, you could also opt for other neutral shades, like a soft tan or even a mauve-tinged brown for a softer look.
Imarni created a short squared style on Collins, but short almond nails and short oval shapes are also super popular choices. Plus, you can always spice it up with a glaze or cateye effect. If you have a style in mind, head to the salon ASAP, or do your own DIY mani at home with our favourite brown shades, linked below.
