“Jeans and a nice top” has been the answer to many a dressing conundrum over the years. The phrase may have clichéd connotations harking back to the 1990s and early-aughts, but it can be quite a helpful parameter to have when deciding on an outfit. Simple yet effective, the combination is a reliable party season go-to – especially for occasions that call for something a little more casual than a dress.
Vogue’s best tops and jeans for party season
While Vogue editors often seem to be bathed in the glow of designer labels and expertly layered ensembles, a number of staffers opt for a more refined approach when it comes to dressing for party season. “A fine-knit top and vintage denim is the perfect desk-to-dinner duo,” says fashion assistant Rosa Weait of her go-to jeans-and-nice-top outfit. “I love to wear my cashmere long-sleeve as a base layer for the office; then, come evening, its semi-sheer fabric and boat neck means that I can style it off-the-shoulder, ready for an evening of dinner and drinks.”
For fashion assistant Lois Adeoshun, it’s all about finding pieces that play off of one another: “I’d pair a cinched Vivienne Westwood blazer with jeans and sparkly heels – preferably from Jimmy Choo. It’s exactly the kind of eclectic outfit I’d wear to a Christmas party or friends-giving dinner.” Meanwhile, for associate fashion editor Charlotte Rutter, and shopping producer Mia Portet, even a tank top can become the key player in a party-ready outfit – especially when layering or silver sparkles are added to the mix.
