What’s been your earliest ever call time?
There hasn’t been a number on the clock that I haven’t had a call time for.
You’re always on your feet… Who makes the best shoes?
Hoka, which I think are now deemed a sort of “middle-aged man’s” trainer.
What would you tell your 18-year-old self?
I’ve spent a lot of time in life worrying about things that have never happened – from disaster hairstyles to my work and my personal life – so I’d tell him not to worry.
The best way to relax?
I have a cat, and my partner, Bill, has two little dogs. I feel very calm when we all settle in front of the TV together. We all have our own seats!
Tell me about your cat, Ned.
I was working with Steven Meisel on a campaign and it involved two little kittens. Ned didn’t get the job, but he sat with me all day on set, only a month old. I decided to adopt him from the shelter.
What’s a typical Guido dinner?
I make this stew-like recipe with halibut, tomato and potato. I had it recently in a restaurant in Rome and it reminded me of my father, who was Spanish and cooked something similar.
The most valuable thing in your kit?
My hands.
Do you have a signature scent?
Aveda Chakra 2. I drench myself in it.
Are there any hairstyles that you’re glad have been lost in time?
No. I’m always looking at the worst hairstyles and thinking about how I can reinvent them.
Who’s a client you always have fun with?
The best life lesson you’ve learnt?
The more open you are to other people, the more they reflect that back.
Where would we find you on your day off?
On my push-bike. It clears my head.
Are you an over- or under-packer?
I can’t bear taking too many things with me, so before I travel I narrow everything down to the smallest bag possible. People are amazed.
Your oddest habit?
It doesn’t matter if I’m in economy or first, I always manage to get off the plane before anyone else.
Any travel tips?
A blackout eye mask and really good earplugs are crucial. And I never eat on board.
Share your best festive tradition.
Throughout the year, we collect Christmas decorations from all the places that we visit. Putting those new pieces on the tree is the start of the holiday for me.
What’s your tipple of the season?
Hot chocolate.
And your favourite festive food?
The side dishes: roasted parsnips and red cabbage.
The best gift you’ve ever received?
My boyfriend bought me a great retro Vespa.
Where should I eat in the Hamptons?
Il Buco Al Mare, out of season – it’s better.
Brush or comb?
Brush. I’ve had my Mason Pearson throughout my entire career. It’s very treasured.
The most memorable hairstyle of your career?
Alexander McQueen’s last show, Plato’s Atlantis. I created an alien-like hairstyle with two fins coming off the back of the head. It was a complicated thing to work out how to create. Because it was his last show, it’s very poignant to me.
You’ve got 24 hours on the south coast, what are you doing?
I’d go with my brother to the New Forest and rent bikes and just ride. Then we’d get the ferry over to Studland and go for lunch at The Pig On The Beach.
What’s your golden rule for hair wash day?
Only apply the shampoo to the roots and massage gently. Never rub into mid-lengths and ends. Let the shampoo travel down the hair.
