Earlier this month I spent a week in The Three Valleys in the Alps, which is not only home to some of the best ski runs in Europe, but is also, in my opinion, the best place for some good old fashioned people (/outfit) watching. On the slopes there were a lot of sand-coloured Goldbergh jackets, red one-pieces and in-boot ski leggings, but the après-ski outfits were just as stylish. Evening attire in the mountains always errs on the side of casual – this isn’t an occasion for a dress or heels.
If you’re unsure about what to pack for evenings in a ski resort, it’s best to prioritise warmth and comfort. Let’s face it: it’s going to be very cold. The overall Alpine aesthetic tends to have a charming, retro appeal – think checked tablecloths, wooden panelling and old skis as decor. So why not play up to this theme with your outfits too? Fair Isle and Nordic prints are a classic choice for tired skiers, and brands like Perfect Moment and We Norwegians have all been playing with the idea of heritage knitwear.
Just like with your skiwear, it is important to pay close attention to the quality of the fabrics and the warmth they can provide when it comes to après-ski outfits. Merino wool or cashmere is always a good idea. If you keep the foundations of your outfit simple – think leggings, jogging bottoms or jeans – you can then add some personality with some playful accessories. A statement balaclava, on-theme headband or bold sunglasses will give any look a fashion edge. If you want to go all-out glamour, nothing looks as luxurious as an outfit that matches the snow, with layers of fluffy, powdery knitwear.

Jeans with an Alpine twist
After a long day carving down the slopes in tight thermals and clunky boots, nothing feels better than slipping into relaxed denim and a cosy knit. For those potentially slippery strolls between chalet and bar, add a face-framing knitted hood and sturdy boots – your tired legs will thank you.
Snowy tones
Channel the frosted mountain tops with an all-white look. Picture a plush merino knit and slouchy jeans styled with super soft accessories, moon boots and a standout bag. Just maybe steer clear of mulled wine splashes while wearing this one.
Nostalgic racer colour palette
Even when you’re giving the black runs a break, Perfect Moment’s retro racer styles look just as good while you’re dancing on tables at your favourite après bar.
Princess Diana-inspired ’90s outfit
Few alpine wardrobes are as iconic as Princess Diana’s ’90s ski outfits. If you’re heading somewhere particularly chic for après, make sure her elevated slope style is firmly on your mood board.
Chalet-bound comfort
Staying put for the night? Soothe those slope-sore joints with a knitted co-ord. Curl up by the fire with a cup of hot cocoa (or something stronger), wrap yourself in a blanket-like scarf, and rest your weary toes in plush shearling Birkenstocks.
Lumberjack classics
Tap into that woodsy, cabin-core feel with a plaid shirt layered under a cord-collared jacket, a snug beanie and rugged worker boots. Add thick wool socks, a thermal layer for evenings spent gathering firewood or sipping something warm outdoors.
Cosy accessories to consider
Après wardrobe already sorted? Elevate it with a new knitted, faux-fur or fluffy winter accessory – sometimes that final flourish makes all the difference.
